PostSubject: Gecko substrate   Sat Jun 21, 2008 2:21 pm

what is a safe gecko substrate, this is such a big question as some people say thing is safe and other say that is now,
now what im wondering, is reptile soil (t-rex forest bed) safe with geckos? its t-rex soil that n the packet says it is safe and if eaten it will just pass through the rep.

i know what you are going to "paper towls", no.

Personally i would never risk it. Anything that is a loose substrate for a gecko can cause impaction.

I use papertowels for everything. Cheap for me and safe for my herps.

You can also use...Repticarpet, wash it's fibers will be better and scrunched together more. Tiles, preferably grouted ones. Newspaper. Other then that i stay away from all.

iv changed my substrate because the t-rex forest bed was too humid, so im now using childrens play sand, not the calci stuff.

Sand will cause impaction.

They eat the calci sand because of the calci carbonates in it which if you put it in water it will clump together as it does in their digestive tracks. ALL sands or loose substrates are NOT good for leos what so ever.

Graphic pics please enter at own risk....This is what happens....

yea, iv done that test with sand in water, the calci clumps, and the play sand does not because of the lack of fat in the play sand.
and i dont keep leos, its for the moorish, and the only pictures i have seen for impaction are of leos, any reason for this, are they known to do this?
