fake rock?

does anyone have any ideas about making fake rocks?
polystyrene should work.

i want to make some fake rocks to use a ledges in my corns vivarium so she can sit up there, as there is an empty space of air which never gets used,

i have looked at a couple of site and they have used polystyrene and then painted them with a "clear matt varnish" and put sand onto the varnish,
but wouldn't the varnish be toxic to the reptile, in my case "my snake".

does anyone know anything about the varnish being toxic towards my snake?????? or any other ideas about making fake rocks for my ledge???
